Even the gods perish. Who knew that the gods would have their last day, too? Ragnarok determines the fate of the gods. And to start this off, the season is winter- not just any ordinary winter- Fimbulwinter. Nobody really sides with anyone in this tragedy. Loki will not be siding with the gods. Fenrir will be released, and really, all of Loki’s hideous children will cause destruction. Surtr was one of those waiting endlessly for Ragnarok. He wields his gigantic sword, prepared to defeat all. Everyone knew Ragnarok was coming. What was unknown was, when? The all-seeing Heimdall had saw it coming, but what could have been done to prevent it? It is now the time. And this won’t be pretty. Loki had boarded the ship, Naglfar. And the head of the frost giants, Hrym, would be there. The frost giants would follow. The dead will follow Loki- from Hel. Most beings will arrive at or near Vigrid. Surtr and the fire giants are included, so is Fenrir and Jormungandr- the Midgard serpent. Then this is when Heimdall blows into the Gjallarhorn, for the first and, last time. It’s time, and he alerts the gods. The gods will prepare and scatter around the Yggdrasil. Odin will ride Sleipnir on his way to Mimir’s Well. The Einherjar and Thor will join him in battle. Everyone will be on their way top Vigrid. And then the battle began. Thor and Jormungandr would slay each other- Thor would attack him with the hammer, but he would suffer to the death with the snake’s poison. Odin targets the dangerous wolf, Fenrir. Freyr would target Surtr, but is defeated. Surtr will also fall beside him. Fenrir would kill both Odin and Tyr, and fights against Garm- the other dangerous wolf, and son of Odin. Fenrir though, falls to him. Loki and Heimdall would fight each other to the death.
This all ends in a tragedy- though it doesn’t last forever. Balder would be awaken from the dead, and Earth will be born. It is said the gods will soon return.
Odin's Eye
It all started with Mímisbrunnr- also known as Mimir’s Well. It is located beneath the Yggdrasil. And that’s where Odin traveled. He traveled with a crave for wisdom. The all-father would sacrifice anything for such a trait. And to Mimir’s Well he would go to seek this. When the god reached his destination, he asked Mimir, “May I have a sip of this sacred water?” Oh, but the price for this water was high, oh so high. And Mimir knew that better than anyone. The well was named after him, after all. But he would refuse. The only one permitted to drink such water was Mimir himself. Only Odin knew how much he sacrificed for the sake of receiving the gift of wisdom. He hadn’t received it yet, and he wouldn’t dare leave without taking a sip from Mimir’s Well. “Please, I insist. I’ll sacrifice anything.” And so the price would be his eye. This isn’t something Odin would refuse. He dropped his eye into the well, and began to drink from the well. Now he was one-eyed and wise.
Loki's Children
It is known that Loki has three monstrous children. Only he would refer to them as beautiful. Loki was married to Sigyn, yes, but it wasn’t her. Instead, it was a giantess, named Angrboda. Odin would call him and introduce hisown children to him. “Hel, Jormungandr, and Fenris Wolf.” Odin would give Loki’s own children their proper places. Jormungandr, to the sea, Hel, to rule Helheim, and Fenris Wolf- only a small puppy- would be watched by the Gods. This story is for another time.
Loki’s children would be there for Ragnarok, causing destruction.
Sif and the Golden Hair and Everything After That
Sif wakes up bald. Real nice. Her long hair is everything to her, and for Thor. So, this wouldn’t be pretty. “THOR! MY HAIR!” She’d yell and wake Thor, and Thor would remain speechless. “This is the last straw, damn him!” ‘Him’ would be Loki. Thor would be disappointed, but not surprised. It was somewhat common for everyone to feel that way towards Loki. But this was dealing with Sif’s hair. It’s a classic, though. Loki helps the gods, then betrays him. A mischievous one, isn’t he? “You do realize we know it was you, right?” Loki was chilling. “What’d I do now?” Sif arrived through the door, bald. “Oh, Valhalla, that’s disgusting!” says Loki, and gives a small smirk. Sif looks at Loki with anger and disgust. “Oh yeah, sorry, that memory was faded. I was just in the mood.” Thor was angry, and asked him why would he do such a thing. He was capable of killing Loki in a second. Loki tried to seem guilty and full of regret, but he would just laugh. “We’re not letting this slide, Loki. She mustn’t remain bald.” “So what do you want me to do? There isn’t anything I can possibly do.” Thor pulled out his fist and threatened to break every bone that exists within his body. Then was Loki afraid and shivering. “N-N-Nidavellir! Dwarfs! Aren’t they like blacksmiths? S-Surely they can craft new hair for Sif!” “Then you must be on your way before I lose my patience and accidentally kill you.”
Loki would then practically run to the dwarfs and then would ask the sons of Ivaldi to craft beautiful hair for Lady Sif. He eventually convinced them to do so, but along with the best ship, Skidbladnir, and the dangerous spear, Gungnir. He was in a mischievous mood then. He then searched for Brokkr and Sindri and convinced them that the sons of Ivaldi had challenged them. “Three treasures. Those boys think you can’t do better than them. Your response?” Brokkr and Sindri doubted it at first, thinking it was one of Loki’s tricks. Loki seemed to convince them that it, in fact, wasn’t him. (But it was.) Loki would bet his head that they couldn’t do better. So now he’d have to try all his might that they lose the challenge. They accepted, and three treasures they would make- Mjollnir, Draupnir, and Gullinbursti. Loki used all his might to interrupt the dwarfs, Brokkr and Sindri. The sons of Ivaldi were no problem, but Brokkr and Sindri were. So he would transform into a fly and do everything to interrupt them, such as biting them or biting them in the eye. Nothing worked, though.
In the end, Brokkr and Sindri had made the best- because of Mjolnir. “Your head,” “Let’s spare my head this time, shall we?” said Loki, nervously. The dwarfs refused. They would approach Loki with knives, ready to cut his head. “Alright, w-wait, I agreed that you can cut off my head, yes, but not my neck. Your not in any position to touch my neck.
They then agreed to sew Loki’s mouth shut. So, it’s now known- the dangerous hammer Thor possesses, of all people, was Loki’s doing.
It all started with just some hair, though.
Tyr and the Hand
Here comes the story of the puppy-that's-not-really-a-puppy-anymore, Fenrir. Tyr? Oh, he was blinded by how adorable and cute the puppy was. Tyr would be the one caring for him all the time because he was so small and cute. Tyr was attached to him. He would always feed and comfort the small being.
Fenrir would then start growing nonstop, and tremendously. It would eat more everyday, and its strength would increase. It started to worry the gods, and at some point intimidate them. Because of this, they knew that the wolf couldn’t remain in Asgard. The wolf would make them shiver, all but Tyr. It makes sense, though. The wolf was raised by Tyr. They had the best times. The gods would come into an agreement in the end. Fenrir would be in chains- with one of the strongest chains. They wouldn’t dare to just tell Fenrir he would be binded. They would play a game- to see if he can break out of the chains everytime to check his ‘strength.’ But the only chains that worked were crafted by the dwarfs- and the chains were called Gleipnir. The gods were somewhat sure that Fenrir could not break these.
And Fenrir sensed that. Refused to share his fear, he refused to be binded with them. He would only agree to be binded with them if a god’s hand would be placed in his mouth. Odin knew that the dangerous wolf was afraid, and would tease him.
It was Tyr who agreed to do it, and the chains were placed on Fenrir. Fenrir used all his strength, and no, he could not bust out of these strong chains.
He then ate Tyr’s hand without hesitation.
This then made Fenrir Odin’s worst enemy. He would, of course, search for Odin on the end of days.
So, do you think that Fenrir and Tyr had a ‘cute’ relationship after all?
Balder and Loki
Admired by all- all but Loki. That was no surprise, though. Frigg was the loving mother of Balder. Balder was like, a blessing to life in everyone’s view. (Except Loki, of course.) Loki hated Balder. Why? It’s kind of a mystery. Maybe because he brings light? He is loved by all? Or because he’s more handsome than Loki himself? He was really, really beautiful.
Balder was perfect- no wait, he had one flaw- the bad dreams he receives were concerning. Odin would then find the meaning of his odd dreams. A beautiful person like him shouldn’t have to go through that- but Loki was joyful realizing this. The end of Balder would soon come.
Frigg refused to spend her time suffering, no she wouldn’t. Her son was a gift to her.
Balder was a pure and positive man. He was lucky to have a mother like Frigg. Frigg would go around, making everything there possibly was in the world promise that they wouldn’t do any harm to the beautiful god, Balder. From trees, to bushes, to, oh wait, not the mistletoe. Was that an error that she committed? Well, we’re not sure yet.
After Frigg had finished with the oaths, they would feast. The gods would throw things at Balder, and nothing would hurt him. They were all merry at this, since… everyone loved Balder.
Loki? He wasn’t happy. So then would his first strike come. He disguised himself.
“So, all things agreed to not harm Balder, Lady Frigg?” “Oh, yes. All things. Except, maybe, that one mistletoe. It seemed so innocent, and small, I don’t believe it could do anything to harm my son. Besides, who would?” “Yes… such a small mistletoe.”
Loki departed. He searched far and wide for a mistletoe, and it appeared. So, what was Loki capable of now?
Hod, the brother of Balder, was blind. He could hear the joy from everyone, and couldn’t help but feel left out. “Hod? How are you? You don’t look very happy,” said Loki. “Yes. I want to join. What is happening?” Loki would explain to him the joy in everyone after knowing that nothing in the world could harm Balder now. “That’s good.” “Want to throw something at him? That’s what everyone’s doing. Here, I have a mistletoe on me. Nothing could harm Balder, not even this innocent mistletoe.” Hod grinned. He wanted to be a part of the party they were having. “Here, I’ll help you aim.”
Everyone was laughing. Loki was ready. He smirked, it was full of envy and darkness. “Now, throw it here.”
There was silence. Hod had a look of confusion on his face. “L-” “Hush now, Hod. Look at what you have done. This… this is a tragedy.” Frigg yelled, wailed, and mourned. Now Hod knew what ‘he’ had done.
But the quest to retrieve Balder back from Hel- as he had not died with honor- had failed. Why?
Because, he is loved by all.
All but Loki.
Loki, Until We Meet Again in Ragnarok
Have the gods ever got tired of forgiving Loki and him betraying them over and over again? Yes. And it’s over after Loki had caused the death of Balder. Can you imagine how the gods felt? Indeed, they were full of so much anger. So, it was Loki’s time.
Where was Loki during all the mourning? He was away, hiding. He was smart, that one. He knew the gods would soon come for him.
So, Loki was now a salmon. He created a plan, a smart one for sure. He was located in the river, but would it trick the gods? No, it would not.
“You could not do this to me, you wouldn’t dare.” The gods had taken the mischievous god to a cave. There, was Sigyn, Narfi, and Vali. “Don’t you touch them.” But they had converted Vali into a wolf, and he had murdered his brother, Narfi.
Loki was tied to the rock with the parts of his dead son. And then Skadi retrieved a poisonous snake and placed it above the god of mischief. The poison would drop from its mouth to Loki’s face- around the area of his eyes. He would yell in pain, and his faithful wife would stay by him. She tried her best to remain silence, but she wept silently because of what her husband was going through. She had a bowl and would place it above Loki so that instead of the poison falling on him, it would fall in the bowl. But she would eventually have to empty it out, and that was when Loki would suffer. Each drop of poison on Loki would cause him to shake dangerously. And this is where ‘earthquakes’ originate from in Midgard. His beautiful face would have scars around the area of his eyes, which is what this art (below) represents.
Loki would bust out of his sons remains and destroy the cosmos in Ragnarok. He will return.
